Change Doesn’t Have to Be a Dirty Word

The fact that everybody knows there needs to be change somehow doesn’t make it any easier to accept. Sometimes it’s not about the logic its the emotion that influences us. As a manger you have probably found yourself explaining all the reasons that change is needed to employees who have simply looked at you and said – no, there must be another way.

Dealing with emotions, I believe, is one of the reasons leaders see change as a dirty word. Why? Because it can be hard to deal with. Many different emotions and people go through them at different stages. It would be easier if everyone was angry at the same time or all in denial etc., wouldn’t it? Maybe. Maybe not.

What makes matters worse is that the more change there is, the more employees see that the last change was unsuccessful (compared to effort and impact) and the more constant it is, the more emotion there is likely to be.

When this happens leaders either just brace themselves and push through the change as quickly as possible accepting people wont be happy and believing it’s in their best interest. Or they could learn from what worked and didn’t before and build that into their plan for the next change.

Dealing with emotions can be draining and time-consuming. Being prepared to deal with it can soften the impact and move people through to acceptance much faster. It is a necessary part of successful change.

So what can you do? First of all accept that there will be emotion and people will be in different parts of the cycle (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance – Kubler-Ross Model). In fact some people might get stuck in one part of the cycle permanently.

Understandably you as the leader or business owner need people to keep moving forward and at the very least keep delivering current commitments. At the same time though you need to demonstrate empathy for what they are going through.

Continue to communicate, make sure you have feedback mechanisms in place, if necessary have counseling services available for employees to use.

Strengths Profiles Can Enhance Your Job Search

A lot of people are stuck in their job search today. If you find yourself there, rest assured you’re not alone. Most successful job searches consist of at least 4 steps including strengths assessment, industry research and targeting, resume building and interviewing. A good psychometric profile can help with each of these steps, even if it just helps you discover where your biggest challenge is and get some help.

There are a number of terrific strengths profiles available today. The DISC Profile may be the most used strengths indicator by businesses world-wide. Close behind, might be Myers-Briggs and Strengths-finder, which was developed by the Gallup Organization a little over a decade ago. I like Stand Out, a new instrument developed by the Marcus Buckingham Company as well. Values Index is another that may add some helpful insight. Each of these instruments can be very useful.

The first way a profile or strengths indicator may help is in identifying the best potential job match. Even if you’re at the place of being willing to take a job doing anything, you’ll be better off in the long run if you have a clear idea what your natural talents and non-talents are and how they match up with specific positions. While not fool proof, most of the mentioned profiles can be useful when debriefed with a skilled job coach that is familiar with the specific instrument.

For example, sales work is potentially a good match for those scoring high in the “I” dimension on DISC. High “Extraversion” on Myers-Briggs, “Woo” on Strengthsfinder and “Influencer” on Stand Out might point in a similar direction. A high score on the “Economic” dimension in the Values Index might be a natural fit for commissioned sales work where there is no ceiling on income.

Can you be successful in sales without these attributes or traits? Perhaps, but sales usually involves meeting a lot of new people. If you find this activity draining or even terrifying, it might become a barrier to both job success and satisfaction.

How to Improve Your Net Promoter Score

Net Promoter is used to gauge your company’s performance by determining the level of satisfaction customers have with your company. This is achieved by simply asking customers how likely they are to recommend your company to a friend or colleague, using a scale of 0 to 10. By asking this question, you get a very clear understanding of what percentage of your customers are loyal.

Every customer who provides a 9 or 10 ranking is classified as a promoter. Promoters are loyal customers who keep buying and refer others without hesitation. Customers who provide a 7 or 8 ranking are classified as passive. Passives are satisfied but indifferent customers who are in danger of moving their business elsewhere. Customers who provide a ranking of 6 or below are classified as detractors. Detractors are unhappy customers who are unlikely to do further business with your company and may use word-of-mouth to let others know of their bad experience.

To calculate your company’s Net Promoter Score, take the percentage of customers who are promoters and subtract the percentage who are detractors. Although Net Promoter Scores vary by industry, a satisfactory score would be anything above 50%, but never settle. Measuring and tracking your Net Promoter Score is not the end of your work. You must still drive improvements in customer loyalty and act on customer feedback.

Regardless of the level of your score, there will always be room for improvement. As a result, consider the following steps when looking to maximize your Net Promoter Score.

Hire and train with focus on customer needs
Make it a strategic imperative to ensure each new hire is customer-focused and that employees spend 5 to 10 percent of their time each week in training that will help develop their skills and understanding of what customers expect. Focus on ensuring employees understand how important it is for everyone to know the business of your customers and how your products and services can help them succeed.

Does Marketing Ever Change?

Is technology really changed marketing? I was discussing this with a peer group recently, and I think they are surprised by my views on this issue. I do not think the marketing has really changed over the last 50 years.

Of course, we have social media and Internet sites that did not exist ten years ago. We can text ads to consumers based on their location in which we once relied on expensive billboards. I must admit, the tools have changed, but the rules for good marketing have not changed much in 50 years.

I was reminded of how this is true, when I read a post by Adam Singer, writing for FutureBuzz. In it, he shared a note from advertising genius David Ogilvy about 50 years ago.

Olgivy list of 10 tips for writers was much like the list of suggestions that I wanted to do for beginners and blogs by writers of advertising copy. My favorites from the list were:

Write the way you talk. Of course – this is harder to do, then it sounds. It takes practice to increase the pace of your speech to the page. If you can, your blog posts are much more readable. One of my favorite things to do is to save the contents. Hearing it out loud helps me to select words that sound more natural.

Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs – It’s not that your readers are stupid, they do not want to take time to digest complex thoughts in your blog. Make it a quick read and are more likely to return. Draw people with simple ideas direct and they are more likely to dig deeper.

Never use slang words like reconceptualizing, demassification, attitudinal judgment. They are characteristic of a pretentious ass-I was not sure what “demassification” meant, so I’m pretty sure I would not use it in a blog post. His point is well taken though; using words that are not part of common discourse alienate your audience.

Can Anyone Hear Me? Political Messages and What You Can Do to Be Heard

As the presidential election gets closer and closer, changes in campaign strategies are becoming evident. While Election Day is six months away, changes in campaign slogans and messages are changed.

Slogans and messages are the center and the focal point of political campaigns. In the 2008 presidential campaign, much can still re-convene the key messages to both Democratic and Republic parties. President Obama was “Change” and Senator McCain was “the first country” and “experience.” These slogans were the focal point of all their marketing efforts. For this reason, slogans tend to be short , simple, and to the point.

However, coming up with one word that embodies all of your campaign and the message can be difficult. In addition, with large amounts of political advertisements and messages, how can you be sure that potential voters will be receptive to your message?

Memorable political advertisements and messages usually have this in common:

· Integrates emotion

· Patriotic Spirit (America First)

· Progress (economic, employment, health reform, etc.)

· Family Oriented

Although there is no strategy to a cookie cutter in the development of your campaign message, you must be certain that you or your policy has this unique characteristic that defines them.

The challenge of developing a message that is receptive to everyone is that voters on both sides have already painted a picture of what kind of candidate you are. For Democratic politicians, they are socialists, too liberal, progressive, diverse, but are not decisive. While on the other side, Republicans are greedy, religious, conservative in their habits, but decisive. These generalizations are deeply instilled in the minds of both parties that it is difficult to create a message that both parties to respond favorably.

So what’s the solution?

Most candidates, if not all of them meet and craft their campaigns to reach their political parties. (Democrats target Democrats, Republicans targeting Republicans) Sounds like common sense, but if your message is not aligned with their ideals and beliefs, you may lose many votes and much support from your own party.

Imprinted Pens Are Easy To Order Online

Everyone knows the printed pens are a great way of advertising. Are you using them for your business? They are easy to buy and cost effective. It really does not much better than that. There are so many different options, with online orders.

Once you start looking online, it may seem a bit overwhelming. There are literally countless styles available. So where do you begin? Let’s look at a few things that will help you make the decision.

First, find a site that has search filters is a huge help. You can sort by pens according to their colors, materials, ink, style and price. Sort by pens on grounds of color, to find those that match the colors of your logo. Different styles are appropriate for different events.

Second, request a sample. If you found some pens that you like, see if you can get free samples. This is the best way to ensure you like the way the pen looks and feels when writing with it. I encourage saving money, but you do not want to get printed pens that are too cheap. This will give a negative impression about your business. Not to mention, it probably will not like a pen that really help and, therefore, will not keep.

Finally, place your order! Before finalizing it, you should get a virtual proof. This is another great way to see exactly what will look like printed pens, with all your art and information about them. If you do not know exactly what you want, just tell the artist. You should be able to give them all the basic information such as company name, phone number and logo and they should be able to take it from there. They worry about the size, font and placement of all information. The artist must be able to get everything there, without looking too cluttered. Sometimes, leaving out a few things, makes the pen more catchy. Remember, less is more, in some cases. Nowadays, with so many people are Internet savvy, a website will suffice in many cases. Sometimes a website and logo is abundance. This makes the pen look great with a little information and printed at the same time, attracts people to your website. Getting them to your site is the point. Once they are there, they are more likely to be intrigued by your products or services and start shopping! Mission accomplished!
